Volunteering is a great way to give back to your community, meet new people, and help preserve Brownsville's natural and cultural heritage for the enjoyment of this and future generations.
Listed below are a few of the various volunteer opportunities the City of Brownsville Parks and Recreation Department offers. By sharing your valuable time and unique skills through volunteering, you are helping your local community thrive.
We are currently looking for:
Adaptive Recreation Aide
Share your interest and talents while having fun with some great people! Volunteers help make it possible for people with disabilities to participate in City of Brownsville Parks and Recreation Department programs. They provide support and encouragement during activities such as Wii games, bingo and cooking.
Office Assistant
Volunteers provide a great service to the staff by assisting with data entry, filing, organizing and answering telephones. Duties include working with staff members and the public, answering phones and taking part in special projects as they come up.
For some, volunteering can be a route to employment, or a chance to try something new which may lead to a career change. From this perspective, volunteering can be a way of:
- Gaining new skills, knowledge and experience
- Developing existing skills and knowledge
- Enhancing a Resume
- Improving one’s employment prospects
- Using one’s professional skills and knowledge to benefit others (usually described as pro bono)
- Meeting new people and making new friends
- A chance to socialize
Volunteers must be 16 years of age to apply. Volunteer applicants 18 years of age and over are subject to a Criminal History check; ensure to include background check and authorization forms with completed application.
Be advised a valid form of Identification is required with each application. Student ID’s are permitted.
You may submit completed volunteer applications to the Organizational Development and Human Resources Department located at City Hall 4th Floor 1001 E Elizabeth Street Brownsville, Texas 78520.

After we receive your application the volunteer coordinator will contact you to schedule an appointment for an interview, so we can match opportunities to your interests. Once the orientation and criminal background check are completed, a supervisor will schedule a time to get you trained and on your way to becoming a Parks and Recreation volunteer!
