Planned Trails

Southmost Trail

Southmost Nature Trail

The Southmost Nature Trail, once completed, will be a 7-mile trail connecting the existing Historic Battlefield Trail (near McKintosh Street) to the deep Southmost Area (near Monsees Road). This four phase project is funded by a Community Development Block Grant, Brownsville Metropolitan Planning Organization Category 7 funds, and the City of Brownsville. Phase I, a 1.8-mile section from International Boulevard to Southmost Boulevard, is currently under construction and has an estimated completion date of December 2015. Once all phases are completed, the Southmost Nature Trail will provide a safe route for pedestrians and cyclists to reach destinations such as 9 elementary schools, 2 middle schools, 2 high schools, Morningside Park, and the Southmost Public Library.

Fort Brown Connection

The Fort Brown Connection, awarded by a TxDOT Transportation Enhancement grant, is currently in the design phase. This 2.75 miles of bicycle and pedestrian facilities will connect the existing Historic Battlefield Trail to a National Historic Landmark, the Fort Brown Battlefield Site. The project will create 5 foot bicycle lanes and replace non-ADA compliant sidewalks with ADA compliant sidewalks and curb ramps. Nearby destinations include: Linear Park, Federal Courthouse, Cameron County Courthouse, the Brownsville Herald, Pacheco Building, Dancy Building, Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Market Square, La Plaza at Brownsville Terminal, Texas Southmost College, the International Bridge, and the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley - among many others.
