2010 Border Models of Excellence in Childhood Obesity

The Brownsville Farmer's Market received the Certificate of Excellence for implementing high standards in the area of effective childhood obesity education, prevention, or service in the U.S.-Mexico border region.

A heartier lifestyle is very important for Brownsville where obesity rates and diabetes are well above the national average. To help combat this, the City of Brownsville and community partners have banded together to help make meaningful changes by providing improved parks, trails, and sporting venues to help encourage exercise.

The Brownsville Farmers' Market brings nutritional education, health services, and fresh, locally grown produce to individuals living in South Texas. Open from 9 a.m. - Noon every Saturday morning between October and May at Linear Park in Mitte Cultural District. The Market, sponsored in part by the City of Brownsville, is just one of the newer healthier initiatives working to bring about healthier lives for the residents of Brownsville.
