Circulation

To obtain a library card you must:
(1) be 18 years of age or older;
(2) be a resident of the State of Texas;
(3) present an valid, acceptable photo ID; and
(4) present proof of your current address.

If you are under 18 years of age, you must have a parent or legal guardian to  apply for you.
Parents or legal guardians are responsible for items checked out by a minor.

To apply for a card you will need one of the following proofs of residency:

Acceptable Photo ID

  The following ID's must be Valid and Current: 
    • Driver's license, temporary Texas driver's license or learner's permit (with additional photo ID)
    • Texas Department of Public Safety ID
    • Passport
    • Resident Alien Registration Card
    • Federal U.S. ID

Acceptable Proof of Current Address in Your Name

    • Valid Driver's license, temporary Texas Driver's license or learner's permit
    • Valid Texas Department of Public Safety ID
    • Personalized check, savings passbook, bank or credit union statement
    • Current utility deposit receipt or utility bill
    • Current credit card bill
    • Voter's registration or notarized temporary voter's registration permit
    • Vehicle registration or liability insurance
    • Official rent receipt; rental agreement, contract or lease
    • Mail postmarked within the last 30 days (if none of the above is available)
Sign up for your library card. You will also need to present your acceptable photo I.D. and proof of your current address. By receiving a library card, you agree to all the rules and fees of the Library System as well as any issued by the City of Brownsville. Rules may be subject to change without prior notice.

Adult Application

To obtain a library card as an adult you must: (1) be 18 years of age or older and (2) a resident of the State of Texas.

You will need to present: (1) a valid picture ID (Drivers License, State ID Card, etc.) and (2) proof of your current address when you submit your application. Sign Up for your Library Card.

Child Application

If you are under 18, you must have a parent or legal guardian apply for you. They must meet the above requirements and come with you to the library when you file your library card application. Parents or legal guardians are responsible for items checked out by minors.  Parent or legal guardian, sign up for library card(s).

FEE SCHEDULE:

Overdue Book: $.10 per book per day
Audiovisuals: $1.00 per audiovisual per day
Lost or Damaged Library Card: $1.00

Item Checkout :

You may check out up to 14 items at ONE time per patron Audiovisuals must be checked out by adults only.  Length of checkout for all items will vary by type:

DVDs/Blu Rays: 7 days

User Account Access:

You may access your library account information anytime online via My Library Account on the Library's website. You must log in with your library card number and personal identification number (PIN), which were assigned to you when you first applied for a library card. This will grant you access to digital resources via the library's web page, as well as allow you to check out library items at any of our check out stations. This will allow you to renew eligible items online.  Be sure to memorize your PIN or keep it in a safe place. Do not share this number with anyone!
 
NOTES:
(1) First-time library cards are free for those who live in the State of Texas.
(2) There is a $1.00 charge to replace a lost card.
(3) Winter residents may obtain a card by showing proof of local address as well as main residence.
(4) Patrons who have had their Brownsville Public Library card for at least 2 months and are in good standing are eligible to apply for a TexShare card (this allows them to borrow materials at participating libraries across the State of Texas.)
