BROWNSVILLE, Texas (March 20, 2019) – At a Regular City Commission Meeting on Tuesday, March 19, 2019, the Brownsville City Commission voted to approve the purchase of five electric hybrid diesel buses for the Brownsville Metro bus fleet.
The buses were purchased for approximately $3,485,090 and funded by Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) Grant VIII funding.
“Brownsville is leading the Rio Grande Valley,” said Brownsville Mayor Tony Martinez. “These diesel hybrid buses will save energy and reduce costs and emissions for a cleaner and greener community.”
Throughout the 2018 fiscal year, Brownsville Metro’s fixed route service provided transportation to nearly over 1.4 million passengers and traveled over 777,000 miles.
In 2016, Brownsville was one of 40 communities to receive TIGER Grant Funding.
