BROWNSVILLE, Texas (April 24, 2019) – At the Lower Rio Grande Valley Development Council Board Meeting on held Wednesday, April 24, 2019, in Weslaco, Texas, Brownsville Mayor Tony Martinez joined elected leaders from across the Rio Grande Valley to sign an agreement to merge the Brownsville, Harlingen-San Benito, and Hidalgo County Metropolitan Planning Organizations.
In addition to Brownsville Mayor Tony Martinez, elected officials who signed the agreement included Hidalgo County Judge Richard Cortez, Cameron County Judge Eddie Trevino, Jr., McAllen Mayor Jim Darling, Edinburg Mayor Richard Molina, Pharr Mayor Dr. Ambrosio Hernandez, Harlingen Mayor Christopher Boswell, and Mission Mayor Dr. Armando Ocana.
The Brownsville City Commission voted to approve support the merger into the Rio Grande Valley Metropolitan Planning Organization at April 16, 2019, City Commission Meeting.
“This historic event to merge the three MPO’s has been a culmination of a long and detailed journey to reach to a balanced regional plan where every community is treated in an equitable fashion,” said Brownsville Mayor Tony Martinez. “The agreement I have signed today is adaptable for the growth of Brownsville and the Cameron County area as interregional traffic increases, our economies grow stronger and federal funding opportunities are leveraged.”
