Brownsville Featured in Texas Historical Commission’s Medallion

BROWNSVILLE, Texas (June 13, 2019) – The Texas Historical Commission (THC) has featured the City of Brownsville in its 2019 Spring Edition of The Medallion, a quarterly magazine containing news and advice about preservation projects, Texas’ historic sites, and heritage tourism opportunities.

The article, Brownsville Beckons: Discover Bicultural History on the Border includes an interview with THC Commissioner Lilia Garcia, a descendant of Rio Grande Valley founding businessman, Franciso Yturria.

In 2016, the THC designated Brownsville a Texas Main Street District, establishing Main Street Brownsville to foster economic development and revitalize historic Downtown Brownsville through historic preservation.

The City of Brownsville is also a Certified Local Government (CLG) Program, which is administered by the THC and is a local, state, and federal government partnership to empower local communities to better protect historic resources by developing and maintaining a successful preservation program.
