BROWNSVILLE, Texas (September 26, 2019) - The Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport in partnership with the City of Brownsville, the Federal Aviation Administration, the US Department of Transportation and SpawGlass celebrated a milestone with a “topping off” ceremony as the final steel beam was placed atop the 97,000 square foot new passenger terminal building.
"The construction of the new airport terminal is a strong example of collaboration between various entities at the local and federal level,” said Brownsville Mayor Trey Mendez. “Putting up the final beam is an exciting moment in our city's aviation history, which began when Charles Lindberg flew the first international mail flight from Mexico to Brownsville in 1929. I envision this new terminal being the first piece of a much larger puzzle. Aside from doubling the amount of gates available for flights, this project will put Brownsville at the forefront of the conversation when it comes to bringing additional airlines to the Valley. I'm looking forward to its completion in late 2020."
About 200 guests attended to commemorate the Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport’s new passenger terminal officially reaching its maximum height. City of Brownsville officials, dignitaries, airport and construction employees signed the last steel beam before it was lifted into place. Jacobs and Corgan, the engineering and architectural firms that were awarded with the project also participated in this important event.
The construction of the new passenger terminal is a team effort,” said Airport Director, Bryant Walker. “While there have been challenges, the terminal project remains on budget and on schedule. And, today, we have successfully crossed a significant milestone.”
Roughly 650 tons of structural steel, 250 tons of joist, and over 1,200 squares of metal deck have been used for the new terminal construction. Additionally, over 3,000 cubic yards of concrete have been placed for the foundation and slabs.
“SpawGlass is proud to be a part of this historic project for the City of Brownsville,” said Eric Kennedy, SpawGlass President, South Texas Division. “The strategic vision to build this new airport terminal will provide growth opportunities for businesses. In turn, this will benefit local families and allow our children to prosper while staying closer to home. These are exciting times for the Rio Grande Valley.”
