[ARCHIVED] CITY COMMISSION HIGHLIGHTS FOR JUNE 6, 2023 MEETING

City Commission Meeting

The Brownsville City Commission at its Jun 6, 2023, regular meeting awarded a construction contract in the amount of $335,703. 60 to Engo Planet for the 30 bus shelters under the Bus Shelter Improvement Project.

The 30 bus stops will be enhanced with solar-powered bus shelters and ADA- accessible sidewalks. Construction on the bus stops is expected to take six months.

The City Commission also adopted a Hotel Occupancy Tax Funding Grant Policy and Application Guidelines proposed by the Brownsville Convention and Visitors Bureau and Office Space Commerce Department.

Under the guidelines, The City of Brownsville will make Hotel Occupancy Tax (HOT) funds available to entities other than the City in accordance with the Tax Code to encourage expenditures that enhance the Brownsville tourism, convention and hotel industry and that help stimulate the continued growth and development thereof. All HOT funds must be used strictly for tourism; for bringing people into the community.

In other business:

  • the City Commission approved a proclamation recognizing June as Pride Month.
  • The City Commission also received an update regarding volunteering to work in city departments and how the process of filling out volunteer forms has been made easier. A new digital application has been developed and the turnaround is now down to 7 to 10 days. Individuals now have the ability to attach PDFs to submit proof of ID, and police department and municipal court background checks.
  • The City Commission awarded a contract to G&T Paving, LLC for the Reconstruction of Street Paving &Drainage Improvement Project to include 11th Street, 12th Street, Lourdes Boulevard and Grande Boulevard located in District 2 in the amount of $2,368,746.82 as budgeted in the Capital Improvement Program.
    The project consists of street, drainage and utility reconstruction of 11th Street, 12th Street, Grande Boulevard and Lourdes Boulevard.
