The City of Brownsville honored Brownsville Police Department Telecommunicators Ida Villarreal, Sarahi Benavides, Mary Blanco, and Officer Albert Buitureida for their outstanding service and dedication in serving and protecting the citizens of Brownsville in the face of a tragic accident. 

The city recognized the dedication and bravery of these individuals at the Brownsville City Commission meeting on August 1, 2023, where they were awarded a proclamation. 

The incident on May 7, 2023, was a devastating mass casualty event caused by an intoxicated driver crashing into a group of pedestrians, resulting in the loss of eight lives and injuring 11 others.  

In response to this crisis, a coordinated effort involving 67 emergency personnel, including firefighters, police officers, and emergency medical services, was immediately launched. 

The proclamation highlights the essential role played by telecommunicators, who are often the unsung heroes behind the scenes. Their coordination and communication skills were vital in ensuring that all relevant agencies and resources were promptly informed and dispatched to the scene, including the deployment of an emergency response helicopter. 

By acknowledging the teamwork and quick decision-making skills of the telecommunicators and the officer involved, the City of Brownsville emphasizes the crucial role that telecommunicators play in emergency situations. Their timely actions and coordinated response significantly contributed to safeguarding lives and assisting all public safety personnel in carrying out their duties effectively. 

Their efforts exemplify the commitment and professionalism of first responders and telecommunicators who work tirelessly to protect and serve their community.
