The Brownsville City Commission at its Aug. 1, 2023, regular meeting approved on a first reading on Ordinance No. 2023-736-Q of the City of Brownsville, Repealing and Replacing Chapter 98 pertaining to traffic and vehicles in its entirety.
The ordinance pertains to speeding on the roadways, the use of mobile devices while driving, and parking on city streets.
The ordinance also establishes a motor vehicle parking fund with revenue from the parking pay stations first allocated for operations and maintenance costs of the downtown area. Any surplus revenue is reserved for one-time capital costs for downtown, with city manager’s or designee’s approval and city commission’s approval when required by law.
Before the ordinance passes, it needs to go before a second reading.
The city commission also appointed two members to the Audit and Oversight Committee.
In other business, the city commission issued the four following proclamations:
- Recognizing Felicity Fox and Zeviel Pineda for competing and medaling in the National History Day Contest held in College Park, Maryland.
- Recognizing the Pan American Roundtable for celebrating its 90 years.
- Brownsville Cardinal Youth Flag Football Team for winning the South Texas Flag Football Championship, advancing to the National Championships and now advancing to the USA Flag Youth World Championships later in 2023.
- Proclamation recognizing Brownsville Police Department telecommunicators Ida Villarreal, Sarahi Benavides, Mary Blanco, and Officer Albert Buitureida for their actions in sending emergency personnel to a mass casualty event.
