Brownsville Mayor John Cowen Jr. presented the introductory remarks at the 88th Texas Legislative Update Luncheon hosted by the Brownsville Chamber of Commerce Thursday, August 31, 2023, at the Brownsville Events Center.
Those attending received an update on the 88th legislative session.
In his introductory remarks, Mayor Cowen said “Your presence here today and insights will undeniably enrich our understanding of the dynamic legislative landscape and will illuminate the pathway forward for our entire region of the Rio Grande Valley in South Texas.”
“At the heart of our gathering today is not just an understanding of our policies, but the potential they hold for shaping our business environment. Our community thrives on the business acumen of its leaders and the dedication of its public servants, and this legislative update serves as a vital intersection for both,” Mayor Cowen said.
Texas lawmakers attending were District 27 Sen. Morgan LaMantia, District 38 Rep. Erin Elizabeth Gamez, District 35 Rep. Oscar Longoria, and District 37 Rep. Janie Lopez.
Mayor Cowen also mentioned the groundbreaking of the El Jardin Hotel that occurred earlier in the morning and he said this served as a chapter in the “rebirth of our downtown.”
During the 88th legislative session lawmakers worked on infrastructure, education, health care and property tax relief for property owners.
