CITY COMMISSION HIGHLIGHTS FOR SEPT. 5, 2023 CITY COMMISSION MEETING

During the September 5, 2023, regular City Commission meeting in Brownsville, several important decisions and discussions took place. Here's a summary of the key points:

 Real Estate Purchase for Neighborhood Stabilization Project: The City Commission authorized the City Manager to negotiate and execute documents for the purchase of real estate property located at 1526 and 1534 E. Jackson Street. This acquisition is part of Phase II of the Jackson Street Neighborhood Stabilization Project, and the purchase amount is $150,000. The project aims to renovate and restore six structures at this location, contributing to neighborhood revitalization.

 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant: The City Commission approved the City of Brownsville Police Department's application for the Fiscal Year 2023 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program. The grant amount is $79,621, and it will be used to acquire technical equipment such as computers, monitors, televisions, and scanners. These resources will enhance the department's capabilities for law enforcement and public safety.

 Contract Award for Capital Theater Cleanup and Ceiling Demolition: The Commission awarded a contract to SpawGlass Contractors Inc. for the cleanup and ceiling demolition of the Capital Theater. The contract is valued at $125,492. The scope of work includes cleaning up debris from the theater floor, separating structural beams from the debris for inspection, and removing the remaining portion of the ceiling to expose the existing roof structure. 

 Recognition of a Scholar and Awareness Day: In addition to administrative matters, the City Commission passed a proclamation recognizing Jesus Garcia as a Revival of Cultural Arts (ROCA) scholar. This  acknowledges Mr. Garcia's contributions to cultural arts in the community. Furthermore, the Commission recognized World Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) Day, which signifies an awareness day dedicated to raising awareness about this medical condition.
