In an effort to support individuals struggling with mental health issues and spread awareness about suicide prevention, the Brownsville Police Department is proud to announce its first annual Suicide Prevention Walk. The event is scheduled to take place on Friday, September 22, 2023, at 6:30 p.m. at the Sunrise Mall in Brownsville.
The walk will commence at the Courtyard area in front of Dick's Sporting Goods, winding its way throughout the mall, and concluding back at the Courtyard. The community is encouraged to join the Police Department in this important event to show solidarity and support for those affected by mental health challenges.
Officer Linda Posada, a member of the Brownsville Police Department's Mental Health Unit, mentioned that the event will feature inspirational speakers, including a mother who will share her personal journey after losing her son to suicide. Their stories will shed light on the importance of seeking help and the resources available to individuals dealing with mental health issues.
Numerous organizations specializing in mental health support will be present at the event, alongside other vendors. These organizations are dedicated to providing assistance to those in need and will offer valuable information and resources to attendees.
Officer Posada said that the Brownsville Police Department has observed an increase in service calls related to mental health issues. To address this pressing concern, the Mental Health Unit was established, and the Suicide Prevention Walk was organized to underscore the message that help is accessible to anyone who requires it within our community.
Residents of Brownsville and neighboring areas are urged to come together for this essential event. Let us demonstrate our commitment to fostering a supportive environment for those battling mental health challenges and show them that they are not alone.
