Several Brownsville Police Department officers will participate in funeral services that will be held on Thursday, October 26, 2023, for a San Benito police officer who was killed in the line of duty earlier this month.
Abril Luna, the spokesperson for the Brownsville Police Department, said members of the honor guard, motorcycle unit, and patrol units will assist with the services for San Benito Lt. Milton Resendez who died Oct. 17, 2023, from a gunshot wound he received to the stomach.
A Mass for Resendez is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 26 at 10 a.m. at St. Benedict's Catholic Church, located at 351 South Bowie St. in San Benito.
The Mass service will be followed by funeral services at the San Benito Memorial Park Cemetery, located at 2500 North Sam Houston Blvd. in San Benito.
A public viewing was held on Wednesday, Oct. 25 at the ABC Event Center, located at 923 East Stenger St. in San Benito. A rosary prayer was also held at that same location.
A private viewing for Resendez's family and for law enforcement officers on Tuesday, Oct. 24 at the Buck Ashcraft San Benito Funeral Home.
Resendez was shot following a pursuit that began in South Padre Island during a traffic stop, authorities said. The pursuit continued to Brownsville but then was called back following an exchange of gunfire.
The suspects were spotted several hours later in Brownsville and a pursuit led them to San Benito where Resendez was then shot, authorities said. The pursuit returned to Brownsville where the suspects were later caught after fleeing from their vehicle.
Resendez had been employed with the San Benito Police Department for 27 years.
