IT'S OFFICIAL: UTRGV ANNOUNCES IT HAS PURCHASED HISTORIC MAJESTIC THEATER

Majestic

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley has officially purchased the Majestic Theater in downtown Brownsville.

UTRGV announced that it closed on the building Nov. 15, 2023, purchasing the historic building from the Roy F. and Joann Cole Mitte Foundation. The U.T. System Board of Regents had granted purchase approval earlier this year.

UTRGV plans to transform the Majestic Theater into a performing arts center for the Brownsville campus.

At its Nov. 14, 2023, Brownsville City Commission Meeting, City Commissioners approved a proclamation recognizing UTRGV for all of it accomplishments and accolades it has received since its inception in 2015.

At several of their presentations to the public, Brownsville Mayor John Cowen Jr. and City Manager Helen Ramirez, AICP, have talked about the city’s partnership with UTRGV and how the renovation of the Majestic Theater is an added plus to the revitalization of downtown Brownsville.

In a UTRGV press release, UTRGV President Guy Bailey said buying the Majestic Theatre has numerous benefits, not just in providing a working and learning space for UTRGV’s performing arts students and faculty, but also by supporting Brownsville itself.

“The added activity will help support local businesses in the downtown area,” Bailey said. “The building and its restoration have historical significance, yes, but this new Performance Arts Center also signifies a big collaborative step into the future for our university and our community.

“We are excited to finally and officially purchase the Majestic Theatre for our wonderful performing arts program,” he said.
