CITY PASSES RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF RENAMING AREA EAST OF BROWNSVILLE TO "STARBASE"

The Brownsville City Commission has officially supported renaming the area east of Brownsville, Texas, to "Starbase," echoing Cameron County's resolution. This decision was formalized at the Commission meeting on December 12, 2023.

Located off Texas Highway 4 and approximately 20 miles east of Brownsville, "Starbase" is notable as the location of SpaceX's commercial space launch sites, marking it as a significant site in the realm of space exploration.

Brownsville Mayor John Cowen Jr., in a letter to the U.S. Board on Geographic Names, U.S. Geological Survey, expressed the city's endorsement of this name change.

“As the Mayor for the City of Brownsville and on behalf of the Brownsville City Commission (as the governing body), I write this letter to share our support for the renaming of the area 20 miles east of Brownsville to “Starbase.” The City of Brownsville Commission approved Resolution 2023-136, a Resolution supporting Cameron County’s proposal to rename the area east of Brownsville to “Starbase.”

“Locals use the name “Starbase,” as it reflects the enthusiasm for this area as the frontier of space exploration, where rockets will be launched to the Moon and Mars” Cowen wrote.

The resolution passed by the City Commission reflects the local enthusiasm for space exploration and the area's evolving identity as a space frontier.

The term "Starbase" is already in common usage locally, similar to how the area around Florida's Kennedy Space Center is referred to as the "Space Coast."

"Starbase" has developed into a vibrant community with over 100 residential units, a school, and a restaurant. Plans for further expansion, including a hotel and additional residential housing, are underway, underscoring the area's growth and its attraction to both residents and visitors.
