Lace up your tennis shoes and get out your exercise pants because The Challenge-RGV is set to begin on Saturday, January 20, 2024, and everyone 18 years and older is invited to join in on this free weight loss event.
This initiative, which offers participants the chance to win $1,000, is not just a fitness challenge but a transformative journey towards better health and lifestyle. Participants will enjoy free access to local gyms and classes, encouraging a holistic approach to health and well-being.
This event is backed by the combined efforts of the UT Health Houston School of Public Health in Brownsville and the City of Brownsville.
A press conference held on January 17, 2024, highlighted the significance of The Challenge-RGV. Notably, Dr. Rose Gowen, Brownsville City Commissioner At-Large “B”, emphasized that The Challenge is more than just a weight loss competition; it's a call to action for everyone to adopt healthier lifestyles and habits in 2024.
Brownsville City Commissioner District 2, Linda C. Macia, shared her personal motivation for participating, focusing on staying healthy for her children.
“They are both very active and I want them to have their mom as long as possible…so please join The Challenge and ask yourself who are you joining the Challenge for because it is so much more than prize money it comes down to our health, our lifestyle, and our longevity,” Macias said.
Lisa Mitchell-Bennett from the UTHealth Houston School of Public Health provided some inspiring statistics: since 2010, over 12,000 people have participated in The Challenge, resulting in a collective weight loss of over 22,000 pounds. This historical success underscores the program's impact on community health and personal well-being.
For those interested in joining, registration and initial weigh-ins are scheduled for 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM on January 20, 2024, at Linear Park at E. 7th and East Harrison St. The Challenge-RGV presents an exceptional opportunity for individuals to embark on a journey of health, self-improvement, and community engagement.
