OFFICIALS DISPLAY STARSHIP ARTWORK TO DISPLAYED INSIDE BROWNSVILLE-SPI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

Airport

Travelers utilizing the Brownsville-South Padre International Airport now have a new piece of artwork to greet them as they enter the airport.

Airport officials on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, officially unveiled a photograph of the Starship rocket that will be permanently displayed inside the airport.

The unveiling of a photograph of the Starship rocket at the Brownsville-South Padre International Airport is a significant event, highlighting the region's involvement in space exploration and its contributions to SpaceX's Starship project.

This new artwork, captured by local photographer Daniel Sanchez, not only adds aesthetic value to the airport but also celebrates the local community's participation in space-related advancements.

Brownsville City Commissioner District 1 Linda C. Marcias emphasized the impact of SpaceX on Brownsville, noting collaborations with local educational institutions like Texas Southmost College.

Brownsville City Manager Helen Ramirez, AICP, highlighted the local contribution to about 90% of Starship's construction, challenging the misconception that the workforce is primarily from outside Texas.

“Why is that important? Because sometimes people think that it's all from outside of Texas but it's not,” Ramirez said.

The city manager pointed out the role of Texas Southmost College in developing programs like orbital welding, which supports the growing space industry in the region.

Ramirez also emphasized the airport's role as an economic driver for Brownsville and expressed confidence in its future growth and success, crediting the leadership of its executive and advisory board.

Ramirez also recognized the significance of community involvement, as exemplified by Daniel Sanchez, a retired teacher from Brownsville ISD, who donated his photograph of the Starship rocket to the airport.

Sanchez expressed his joy and gratitude for his artwork's selection, making the moment more poignant due to his battle with cancer.

“I’m here. I am feeling good and I am very thankful to all of you,” Sanchez said.

Sanchez’s contribution symbolizes the local community's pride and engagement in space exploration developments at Starbase near Boca Chica Beach.

This artwork is more than just a decoration for the airport; it serves as a connection for travelers to the local culture and achievements, enhancing their travel experience and offering a glimpse into the exciting developments happening in the area.
