BROWNSVILLE, Texas (June 5, 2017) – The Distinguished Budget Presentation Award has been presented to the City Brownsville by the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) for the Fiscal Year Beginning October 1, 2016.
The Distinguished Budget Presentation Award reflects the commitment of the City of Brownsville to meet the highest principles of governmental budgeting.
In order to receive the award, an entity must satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation. These guidelines are designed to assess how well an entity’s budget serves as: a policy document; a financial plan; an operations guide; and a communications device. Budget documents must be rated “proficient” in all four categories, and in the fourteen mandatory criteria within those categories, to receive the award.
In addition, a Certificate of Recognition for Budget Preparation has been awarded to the City of Brownsville Finance Department for having attained the award.
“We are honored to receive this prestigious award for the fifth consecutive year,” said Finance Director Lupe Granado III. “This award represents a significant achievement and the City of Brownsville’s commitment to transparency, communication and accountability for its residents.”
The GFOA established the Distinguished Budget Presentation Awards Program (Budget Awards Program) in 1984 to encourage and assist state and local governments to prepare budget documents of the very highest quality that reflect both the guidelines established by the National Advisory Council on State and Local Budgeting and the GFOA’s best practices on budgeting, and then to recognize individual governments that succeed in achieving that goal.
