[ARCHIVED] Main Street District

Main Street

Brownsville is one of three cities in Texas to be designated a 2016 Texas Main Street City by the Texas Historical Commission (THC).

The THC's Texas Main Street Program is a revitalization program for historic downtown and neighborhood commercial districts. Brownsville will officially enter the program on January 1, 2016, becoming the 88th designated participant. Brownsville will be part of the state's urban Main Street network.

“The Texas Main Street Program has been instrumental in the revitalization of hundreds of cities across the nation and dozens in Texas,” said City of Brownsville Heritage Officer Roman McAllen. “We are extremely grateful to the Texas Historical Commission for their decision; the four point management approach is integral to the program and I hope it will serve Brownsville well in the coming years.”

"The Texas Main Street Program is one of the most successful downtown revitalization programs in the country," said THC Chairman John L. Nau, III. "The Texas Historical Commission is proud to partner with these communities to identify new opportunities and investments that will encourage economic growth while preserving their unique qualities and history."

The Main Street Program stimulates private sector downtown reinvestment, and helps retain, expand, and recruit businesses, while also creating new jobs in Texas. The Program began in 1981 as one of the first state coordinating programs in the U.S. Since then, 175 Texas communities have participated in the program. Participating communities have generated more than $3.1 billion in overall reinvestment into their historic downtowns, and created more than 33,000 jobs and 8,500 small businesses.

Every year, the THC may select up to five Texas cities for official Main Street designation. Local Main Street programs receive a wide range of services and technical expertise from the THC including design and historic preservation, planning, economic development, organizational management, and training.

Other cities that received the 2016 Texas Main Street City designation are Corpus Christi and Sherman.
