BROWNSVILLE, Texas (August 2, 2017) – At a Regular Meeting on Tuesday, August 1, 2017, the Brownsville City Commission voted to approve Resolution 2017-044, “A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF BROWNSVILLE EXPRESSING OPPOSITION TO CONSTRUCTION OF THE BORDER WALL IN OUR COMMUNITY.”

Resolution 2017-044 resolves: “The City of Brownsville has long maintained shared heritage, tradition, and friendship with Heroic Matamoros (Matamoros) and the rest of Mexico. A border wall is an offensive and damaging symbol of fear and division that will increase tensions with Mexico, one of the United States' largest trading partners and a neighbor with which communities such as Brownsville in the border region are inextricably linked culturally, physically, and economically.”

Further, Resolution 2017-044 states: “The border wall is an affront to the City's core values of inclusiveness and tolerance, and a threat to the economic and cultural vitality, integrity and stability of our community.”

“Now that we have a movement to continue building a border wall, I would like to promote this resolution where we oppose ourselves to the construction of more wall within our city,” said Brownsville City Commissioner At-Large “A” Cesar De Leon.

“In times of budget deficits, in times when we all have to tighten our belts, I wonder why the federal government wants to build a wall and not give us more money for drainage, like we’ve asked, not give us more money for streets, not give us money for fifty or sixty more officers which would actually make our community more secure,” De Leon added.

“I completely agree,” said Brownsville City Commissioner At-Large “B” Rose M. Gowen. “I think this is an easy resolution to support because there’s so many reasons not to have a wall.”

“The community, as a whole, supports our decision as well,” Gowen added.
