BROWNSVILLE, Texas (January 17, 2018) – The City of Brownsville announces the appointment of Michael L. Lopez as Interim City Manager. The Brownsville City Commission voted to approve Lopez’s appointment at a Regular Meeting on Tuesday, January 16, 2018.
As Interim City Manager, Lopez will serve as the chief executive officer and head of the administrative branch of the City, responsible to the Brownsville City Commission for the efficient administration of all City affairs and assure all laws and ordinances are enforced.
Lopez joined the City of Brownsville in March 2015 as City Secretary. In April 2016, he was promoted to Director of the Planning & Development Services Department.
Prior to his appointment as Interim City Manager, Lopez served as Assistant City Manager and Interim Assistant City Manager, overseeing the Planning & Development Services Department, including the Office of the City Secretary, Planning & Zoning Division, and Building & Permitting Division; the Public Health & Wellness Department; Purchasing Department and the Office of Grant Management & Community Development.

Lopez is trained in project management and process improvement, while bringing more than 15 years of leadership, management and public sector experience. In addition, he brings senior management experience in Federal, County and City government including: public policy, human resources, planning and zoning, grants management, public works and elections.
Lopez holds a Master of Public Administration from National University in San Diego, California, and a Bachelor of Arts in History from California State University in Fresno, California. Lopez is also a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy.
