Why is the City investing in bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure?
The City of Brownsville is investing in bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure to provide safe and convenient alternative (or “active”) transportation options. In addition, accessibility to active transportation infrastructure encourages healthier lifestyles.

What does the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee do?
The Committee’s purpose is to identify, assist and advise the City with all activities concerning bicycles and pedestrians, which includes but is not limited to, reviewing and making recommendations on issues related to bike and pedestrian safety, education, projects, programs, signage, and plans.

Are bicyclists allowed to drive on the streets?
Yes. Per the Texas Transportation Code, cyclists have the same rights and duties applicable to a driver operating a vehicle. Bicycles may be operated on all roadways except where prohibited by statue or regulation.

What is the difference between a bike lane and shared use lanes (also known as shared lane markings or 'sharrows')?
A bike lane is a portion of the roadway that is designated for preferential use by bicyclists. Shared use paths, look exactly the same as regular vehicular lanes only they have road markings to indicate a shared lane environment for bicycles and automobiles.

What is the difference between a sidewalk and sidepath (or multi-use path)?
A sidewalk is an accessible pathway parallel to the streets that predominately serves pedestrians and should be 5-7 feet wide. Sidepaths are larger sidewalks, typically between 10-14 feet in width (8 feet minimum). These paths are wider to accommodate all non-motorized users, such as pedestrians, skateboarders, bicycles, roller skaters, etc.
